Frequently Asked Questions:

Getting an Alaska Driver License

Alaska teens are eligible to apply for an instruction permit when they turn 14 years old. Applicants will need to bring a completed application and parental consent form and proof of identity and residence to a DMV location. Applicants will need to pass a vision test and a knowledge exam during their visit. Prior to taking the knowledge test, applicants should study the State of Alaska Driver Manual.

Instruction permits are valid for two years and may be renewed one time. Drivers who hold an instruction permit must have a licensed driver over the age of 21 who has at least one year of experience driving the same type of vehicle in the passenger seat at all times.

Drivers who have held an instructional permit for at least six months and have turned 16 years old are eligible to apply for a provisional license. Drivers must also have completed 40 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours in challenging conditions such as inclement weather and after dark. Application must be made in person at a DMV office and the applicant must pass a road test. When driving unaccompanied on a provisional license, the only passengers under 21 that are allowed are siblings, and driving may not occur between 1:00 am and 5:00 am unless it is for the purpose of employment.

Upon reaching the age of 18, Alaska drivers may apply for a full, unrestricted driver’s license.

Alaska License Renewal

Alaska drivers can renew driver’s licenses online, by mail, or in person.

Alaska driver’s licenses expire 90 days after the driver’s 21st birthday and can only be renewed after the birthday. Drivers over 22 can renew their licenses online or by mail if their personal information hasn’t changed and they did not renew by mail during the previous renewal.

Some drivers who are not otherwise eligible to renew online or by mail may be granted an exception if they do not have a local DMV office. Rural Alaska residents can find more information in the Guide to Rural Driving Information.

Alaska REAL ID

Do you fly commercially or visit federal property? Beginning October 1st, 2021, a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID will be necessary to board domestic flights and access federal property, such as military bases and government offices. A REAL ID is identified by a star in the top right corner.

There is a $20 fee, in addition to standard driver’s license fees, to purchase a REAL-ID compliant driver’s license.

Visit the REAL ID Checklist to see a list of acceptable documentation.
