Florida BDI Course Content
The BDI course focuses on several critical human-choice factors that contribute to many motor vehicle crashes and motor vehicle fatalities in Florida. Review the following content segments to sample material covered in the course.
Drowsy Driving: Studies show that drivers who operate a motor vehicle while tired exhibit many of the same signs as intoxicated drivers. Extreme fatigue may lead to moments of dozing behind the wheel.
Here are some warning signs that you may be drowsy or sleep deprived.
- An inability to recall the last few miles traveled
- Disconnected or wandering thoughts
- Difficulty focusing or keeping your eyes open
- Your head feels heavy
- Drifting from the lane in which you are driving
- Reaction time is slowed
- Yawning repeatedly
- Missing traffic signs
Some ways you can prevent yourself from becoming drowsy while driving:
- Be well rested before you start; try to get a full 8 hours of sleep the night before, and get on the road early
- Avoid driving during late night and early morning hours. Between midnight and 6am, a person’s natural sleep time, you may experience increased drowsiness
- Take regular rest stops, even if you are not tired
- Keep moving your eyes. Shift them to focus on objects near and far. This will keep your eyes and brain engaged
- Keep your car’s interior cool
- Eat healthy meals. Avoid foods high in fat and sugar, which can contribute to fatigue
Speeding: Speeding is a major cause of injury and death on roadways. By knowing traffic laws related to speed, and apply them in your daily driving, might just extend your life.
Almost every major roadway will have marked speed limit signs. Drivers are required to stay within the posted maximum and minimum speed limits. There are also times where you may want to adjust your speed in order to adjust to the conditions of the roadways. If you are driving through a storm, or there is ice on the road, or you are driving in the dark on a rural road without lights, you may want to slow down.
There are many situations that require speed regulation:
- Driving in a work zone
- Driving in a school zone
- Driving around curves
Aggressive Driving: If you get behind the wheel when you’re angry, or you allow other drivers to make you angry, you may have just made the road a more dangerous place.
Here are a few of the habits of aggressive drivers:
Excessive speeding: excessive speed is a common trait of aggressive drivers, even when they aren’t in hurry.
Running red lights and stop signs: feelings of anger or other strong emotional states can impair your judgement and cause you to do things that you might otherwise deem unsafe.
Making frequent lane changes, often suddenly: aggressive drivers will often weave in and out of lanes or speed up just to get ahead of one car.
Passing illegally or unsafely: passing outside of a passing zone is against the law, and it is also unsafe and can lead to head-on collisions, or situations where cars run off the road.
Failing to signal: failing to use a turn signal is one of the most common traits of aggressive driving. By not signaling when changing lanes, drivers around you are unaware of your intentions to potentially move your vehicle in or near their path.
Here are some tips for staying in control:
Allow plenty of time for trips. If you know that you have a tendency to be impatient, make it a habit to allow an extra 5 or 10 minutes for your trip.
Give others the benefit of the doubt. You’re not the only one frustrated by the congestion or the construction zone. Be polite and courteous.
Avoid peak driving hours if you can. Can you go to work early? Can you change an appointment to avoid rush hour? If you cannot do this, and you find yourself in traffic often, then this is just a fact of your day.
By understanding these factors and the techniques for safely avoiding them, you have a head start on passing the BDI exam.
