Frequently Asked Questions

Idaho Insurance Discount

How can I get my defensive driver insurance discount in Idaho?

1. Talk with your insurance agent

Insurance companies often encourage clients to take an online traffic school class. When drivers learn to be safer on the road, they tend to have fewer accidents. And fewer claims to file saves insurance companies money.

The first step toward reducing your insurance rate is to ask your agent about available discounts for completing the DriveSafe Online course.

2. Complete the DriveSafe Online Idaho Accident Prevention Program

When you register to take any of our online courses, you get full access to all course features for one simple price. Full-screen video. Interactive scenarios. Practice quizzes. Final exam. Course completion certificate.

3. Submit your completion certificate to your agent

Your defensive driving course completion certificate is emailed to your inbox immediately after you pass the final assessment. You can also have the certificate emailed directly to your insurance agent to begin processing your discount.

How much money can I save on car insurance?

The average annual premium for Idaho drivers is more than $1,000. When you complete an online driver improvement course, you could earn a discount up to 10% on your vehicle insurance.

Ask your insurance agent to find out how much money you are eligible to save when you complete an online safe driver course.

Idaho Point System

If you receive a traffic ticket in Idaho, points are added to your driving record. The Idaho Transportation Department’s (ITD) Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) monitors driver performance and uses the following point system:

3 Points – Speeding 1-15 mph over the posted speed limit
3 Points – Following too close
3 Points – Failure to yield at intersection
3 Points – Inattentive driving
4 Points – Speeding in work zone

If you accumulate too many points, the DMV will take the following actions:

  • Collect 12 to 17 points within 12 months – Receive a 30-day suspension
  • Collect 18 to 23 points within 24 months – Receive a 90-day suspension
  • Collect 24 or more points within 36 months – Receive a 6-month suspension

Reducing Driving Points

Fortunately, Idaho allows drivers to remove existing points from their driving record. By completing the DriveSafe Online defensive driving course, you may reduce your point total by 3 points every 3 years.

Before you begin the course, be sure to check with appropriate local authorities to make sure you qualify for point reduction.

Idaho DMV Locations

In Idaho, driver’s licenses, driving permits, and ID cards are issued through the county sheriff’s offices. Keep in mind that not all locations offer these services.

Visit the Idaho DMV website to locate Idaho driver license services closest to you. The searchable list also includes hours of operation and times allowed for testing.

Documents to Take

There are specific documents you must take when visiting the DMV office. This information must prove that you are an Idaho resident.

The following items are acceptable:

  • Lease/rental agreement
  • Recent utility bill
  • School enrollment records

You must also prove your age and identity. The following list includes acceptable options:

  • Current Idaho driver’s license or ID card
  • Out of state driver’s license
  • Birth certificate
  • Passport
  • Conceal and carry ID

Review the complete list of acceptable and required documents before you visit the DMV office.

Getting a New Driver’s License

Whether you are a new driver or updating an expired license, you must complete a series of tests.

Written DMV Test

The Idaho written DMV exam tests your understanding of Idaho traffic rules and regulations. You are required to know the meaning of road signs, traffic signals, and road markings. You also must be familiar with laws that control speed limits, passing, turning, and vehicle maintenance.

The DriveSafe Online Idaho Accident Prevention Course is designed to prepare you to pass the written DMV test. You may also study the Idaho Driver’s Handbook.

Vision Test

Of course, good eyesight is important to keep you safe when operating a vehicle. You must pass vision screening to qualify for a driver’s license.

Road Test

You must prove that you are capable of safely handling a vehicle on the streets and roadways of Idaho. The skills test pairs you with a driving instructor who verifies how well you handle your car in various driving situations. When you prove your driving skills meet state requirements, you are on your way to securing your Idaho driver’s license.

Teen Drivers

Teen drivers between the ages of 15 – 17 must follow a graduated driver’s license program. Regulations restrict when and where new drivers may drive, as well as who should be in the car while driving.

The restrictions gradually ease as teen drivers age and gain more experience behind the wheel. Review the official Idaho DMV Graduated Driver’s License Program fact sheet for all the information you need to know to qualify for learner’s permit.

Idaho REAL ID Star Card

The REAL ID is a federally promoted program designed to add another layer of identity verification. Anyone traveling on domestic flights or visiting a military base or federal building must show a REAL ID or other acceptable form of ID (e.g. passport).

The REAL ID Star Card replaces your current Idaho driver’s license. You can tell the difference by the gold star in the corner of the card.

Getting a REAL ID is easy if you have a current Idaho driver’s license. Simply visit an Idaho DMV office and show the appropriate documents to verify your identity. This includes your Social Security number. Learn more about the REAL ID program and how to obtain your own Idaho Star Card.
