How to Get an Insurance Discount
If you have confirmed with your agent that you’re eligible for an insurance discount, simply
1) register for a DriveSafe Online course
2) review the videos in the course
3) pass the final exam.
Then provide your agent with the certificate of completion emailed to you after you finish the course. If you’re eligible, your agent will use the certificate to apply a defensive driving discount.
For certain traffic offenses, you may also be eligible to dismiss a traffic ticket or avoid points added to your driving record simply by passing a DriveSafe Online course and meeting court requirements. When you maintain a clean driving record, you protect your driving privilege and keep insurance rates from skyrocketing.
Keep in mind that laws and regulations regarding the use of online defensive driving courses can vary from court to court. Before you take any online driving course, be sure to ask the court handling your traffic violation if the course meets their requirements.
Indiana BMV Information
In Indiana, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) is the government agency responsible for issuing driver’s licenses and providing other vehicle-related services. Many of the services provided by the Indiana BMV are available online through the Indiana BMV website. You can also schedule driving exams through the site.
For more information, download the Indiana Driver’s License Manual from the BMV website.
Getting an Indiana Driver License
New Drivers
Indiana residents who are 15 years of age can obtain a learner’s permit that allows them to practice supervised driving. Those applying for a learner’s permit must be enrolled in an approved driver’s education course and must also pass a vision screening and knowledge test before being issued a permit.
A learner’s permit is required to be held for at least 180 days for new drivers between the ages of 16 and 21 before the driver can advance to a probationary license. A driver must also be at least 16 years and 90 days before advancing if they have completed the driver’s education course. Drivers who have not successfully completed a driver’s education course must be at least 16 years and 270 days old before advancing to a probationary license. A driving skills test is also required in order to advance to a probationary license. The probationary license becomes a standard license when the driver reaches 21 years of age.
New drivers over the age of 21 are eligible to skip the learner’s permit and probationary license upon passing the vision screening, knowledge test, and driving skills test. Additional information about exams and screenings can be found on the BMV website.
Indiana License Renewal
Most Indiana driver’s licenses that were most recently renewed in-person at a BMV branch can be renewed online at the MyBMV website. However, if your name and address have changed since your license was last issued, if you have a restriction or endorsement on your license that prevents online processing, or if you are required to complete an examination, you must visit a BMV branch in order to process your renewal.
Indiana REAL ID
Will your ID fly? If it doesn’t have a star in the upper right-hand corner, you won’t be able to use it to board domestic flights or access federal facilities, such as military basis, in the very near future. Only a REAL ID has the star that indicates your ID is ready to fly.
A REAL ID requires more substantial proof of identity than standard Indiana driver’s licenses. A REAL ID Checklist has been provided for those in the Hoosier State to know what is identity and residency documentation is required to obtain a REAL ID.
