Minnesota DMV Locations
There are multiple locations available throughout Minnesota where you can get a new driver’s license or renew your current license. You may visit a deputy registrar office, driver’s license agent office, or Department of Vehicle Services exam station. Each location offers specific services.
Check the state web site to find a location closest to you that offers the service you need.
The DVS also offers several services online. You may be able to complete your task without visiting a DVS office. See the complete list of DVS services available online.
Documents to Take
If you must visit a DVS office in person, there are certain documents you must show to get your new driver’s license.
Your current driver’s license or ID card is the best option to prove your identity. If you don’t have your license or ID card, you must show documents to prove that you’re a Minnesota resident.
The following items are acceptable:
- Lease/rental agreement
- Recent utility bill
- School enrollment records
You must also prove your age and identity. The following list includes acceptable options:
- Birth certificate
- Passport
- Marriage certificate
Review the list of acceptable documents and standard identification requirements before you visit your local DVS.
Getting My Minnesota Driver’s License
If you have a current driver’s license from another state and recently moved to the North Star State, you will need to get a Minnesota driver’s license. You have 60 days after becoming a Minnesota resident to get your new driver’s license.
Written Test
The good news is that you do not need to take a road skills test if you have a current driver’s license. Keep in mind that a skills test is required if you are applying for your first license or if your license is been suspended for more than one year.
You are required to pass a written knowledge test to earn your Minnesota license. The DVS written exam contains multiple choice and True/False questions about Minnesota traffic laws and road signs.
The DriveSafe Online Minnesota driver improvement course is a perfect tool to help you prepare to pass the written DVS test. You may also review the Minnesota Driver’s Manual before you take the written test.
Vision Test
Your vision will also be screened during your visit to the DVS. You vision must be at least 20/40 to qualify for a driver’s license.
Teen Learner’s Permit
Minnesota has a graduated licensing system designed specifically for teens. As drivers gain more experience behind the wheel, they are permitted to drive longer during various parts of the day and evening.
Read all about the Minnesota Teen Driver Licensing System.
Do I Need a REAL ID?
If you plan to fly domestically or visit a federal building or military base, you must get a REAL ID.
The REAL ID is a federal program that adds another layer of security to verify your identity.
The REAL ID replaces your current Minnesota driver’s license. You can tell the difference by the gold star in the corner of the card.
Just visit a DVS office and show the appropriate documents to verify your identity. This includes your Social Security number.
