Montana DMV

Montana offers numerous locations to obtain a new or renewal driver’s license. Some of these are in libraries and courthouses – which require you to prepay for your services with the county treasurer and present a receipt at the licensing station – and others are standalone driver’s license offices. Check the Montana Department of Justice website to find a location near you and the specific payment process for that site.

Although most driver’s licenses must be renewed in person, in certain cases a license may be renewed by mail. Review the requirements on the website for more information.

Documentation

When visiting a Montana Driver’s License office in person, you will need to show your current driver’s license or ID card to prove your identity. If you don’t have your license or ID card, you must show two primary sources to prove your identity.

The following documents are commonly used as primary identification:

  • Certified U.S. or Canadian birth certificate
  • Valid, unexpired U.S. passport
  • Current U.S. military identification card
  • Tribal identification card

Additional primary documentation for proof of identity can be found on the Montana DOJ’s website.

Alternatively, you can provide one primary identifier from the list above, and one secondary identifier, such as those listed below:

  • S. social security card or Canadian social insurance card
  • Certified copy of marriage license
  • S. or Canadian driver’s license or identification card that has expired within previous five years

Review the list of acceptable documents and standard identification requirements before you visit your local driver’s license office.

How do I get my Montana driver’s license?

If you’re a new resident of The Treasure State, you have 60 days after establishing residency to apply for your Montana driver’s license.

If you’re in the military on active duty, or are the spouse of someone on active duty, and you have a driver’s license issued in another state, you do not need to obtain a Montana driver’s license unless you have employment outside of the military. Find more information about the military and driver’s licenses in Montana at this website.

Written Test

Driver’s license examiners have the ability to waive the requirement for a written test and road skills test for any new Montana resident who has a valid license issued in another state.

However, it is not guaranteed that your examiner will waive these tests. You should prepare by reviewing the Montana Driver’s Manual before you visit an examiner’s station.

Vision Test

Your vision will also be screened during your visit to the driver license station. Your vision must be at least 20/40 to qualify for a Montana driver’s license, and your peripheral vision must be at least 105 degrees.

Teen Learner’s Permit

Montana has a graduated licensing system designed specifically for teens. As drivers gain more experience behind the wheel, they are permitted to drive longer during various parts of the day and evening.
