Frequently Asked Questions
Getting a Nevada Driver License
New Drivers
Nevada residents may obtain an instruction permit when they reach the age of 15½. These drivers must present proof of identity, such as a certified copy of your birth certificate and a Social Security card, and two documents that prove Nevada residency. Drivers seeking an instruction permit are not required to complete a driver’s education course or a minimum amount of driving experience.
Drivers who would like a regular Nevada driver’s license and who are under 18 must first hold an instruction permit for at least six months, then complete a minimum number of behind-the-wheel hours and/or a driver’s education course. Specific requirements for experience hours are available on the Nevada DMV Teen Driver’s website. Drivers must also pass a knowledge test and vision test, in addition to a driving skills test, in order to receive a Nevada driver’s license.
Drivers over 18 who have never held a U.S. driver’s license should first apply for an instruction permit. Once granted, these drivers will then be eligible to take the knowledge test, vision test, and skills test required to advance to a full driver’s license. No driver’s education course or experience hours are required for new drivers over the age of 18.

Nevada License Renewal
Nevada driver’s licenses can be renewed in person at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices in Carson City, Henderson, Las Vegas or Reno. Most licenses can also be renewed online using a Nevada MyDMV account. Drivers whose licenses are due for renewal will receive a postcard via mail with information on renewal.
Mail or fax renewal is available to many drivers aged 65 and older. If you are eligible for mail or fax renewal, you will receive a full-page application with your renewal notice.
Nevada REAL ID
If you plan to use your driver’s license as proof of identity for boarding domestic flights after October 2021, you will need to ensure that you have a REAL ID.
REAL IDs will only be issued in person. Get a list of the documentation needed to apply for your REAL ID at the GETREALNEVADA website.
Once you have a REAL ID, no additional documentation is required to maintain it, and it will be renewed according to standard Nevada driver’s license renewal policies.
