Can I take an online course to reduce driving record points?
Yes. NDDOT allows eligible drivers to remove 3 existing points from their record by completing an approved driver improvement course like DriveSafe Online. If you receive a new traffic ticket, you could avoid up to 5 points being added to your diving record.
Check with the court to make sure you are eligible and submit your certificate within the designated time period.
Keeping your record clean is important because your driving privileges could be suspended if you accumulate too many points within a certain time frame.
North Dakota assigns points for the following traffic violations:
1 Point – Speeding 11-15 mph over the posted speed limit
3 Points – Speeding 16-20 mph over the posted speed limit
2 Points – Failing to yield right-of-way
3 Points – Failing to stop at a railroad crossing
6 Points – Reckless driving

How do I get a North Dakota driver’s license?
New License
If you meet the age requirements and are ready to obtain your first North Dakota driver’s license, you must visit one of the DMV locations in person.
If you need to take a road test, you must first call the office to schedule an appointment.
Written knowledge tests are required but do not require a call-ahead appointment. Just go to the closest DMV location at least one hour before the office closes. That should give you enough time to complete the written test.
License Renewal
You may renew your current North Dakota license anytime within 10 months of the expiration date without losing time remaining on your current license.
You have a couple options for renewing your license. You may submit your application in person at one of the DMV locations, or you can take advantage of the online renewal process. There are several restrictions for online renewal, so check the NDDOT website for complete online license renewal eligibility information.
How do I prepare for the written DMV test?
You are required to pass a written knowledge test in order to receive your learner’s permit, first driver’s license, or if your license is suspended and you need to have it reinstated.
The DriveSafe Online North Dakota Defensive Driving Course is an interesting and engaging way to learn the information you need to know to pass the written test. You may also review the North Dakota Driver’s Manual.
