Frequently Asked Questions:

Getting a Vermont Driver License

New Drivers

New drivers in Vermont who are at least 15 years of age are eligible to apply for a learner’s permit. Applicants must pass a knowledge exam and vision test, show proof of identity and residency, and—if they are under 18—a parent or guardian’s signature on the application. Permit holders must have an unimpaired licensed driver over the age of 25 in the front passenger seat at all times while driving.

Once a permit holder is 16 or 17 years old and has held their permit for at least one year, with a clean driving record for the previous six months, they are eligible to apply for a Junior Driver’s License. The driver must also have completed a state-approved driver’s education course and submit a driving log, certified by a parent or guardian, showing 40 additional hours of supervised drive time. The driver must then pass a road test in order to advance to the Junior Driver’s License. Once the Junior Driver’s License is awarded, the driver must adhere to restrictions on the number of passengers and the usage of electronic devices.

New drivers over the age of 18, or drivers who turn 18 while holding a Junior Driver’s License, can obtain an unrestricted license upon passing the vision, knowledge, and road tests.

Vermont License Renewal

Vermont issues renewal notices to licensed drivers approximately 30 days prior to expiration. If the expiring license has a photo that was taken within the previous four years, drivers can submit their renewal by mail.

Vermont drivers can also renew online by visiting the MyDMV website.

Appointments for in-person visits for renewal can be scheduled at the Vermont DMV Online Scheduling System.

Vermont REAL ID

Vermont offers REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses to all new and renewing drivers. REAL ID is a credential that will be required as of October 1st, 2021, for travel on domestic flights and to access federal property, such as military bases and government buildings.

You can get a REAL ID at no additional cost during your standard renewal period, or you can pay the replacement fee to convert your existing license to a REAL ID outside of the renewal period. You must provide the same documentation a new driver’s license applicant would provide in order to receive a REAL ID.

How to Get a Vermont Insurance Discount

Insurance companies may offer a defensive driving discount to eligible Vermont drivers. The terms and amount of savings may vary from provider to provider. Please contact your insurance company to find out if you are eligible to submit our course completion certificate for a discount.

Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
