Frequently Asked Questions
Getting a Wisconsin Driver License
The Wisconsin DMV has developed an Interactive Driver’s License Guide to guide Wisconsin drivers through the process of obtaining a driver’s license, whether as a new license or a renewal. The interactive guide will review your driving record and determine your eligibility for a Wisconsin driver’s license and provide you with a checklist of requirements for obtaining your license.
Through the guide, you will be able to pre-fill any required application and, if eligible, you may be able to use the guide to submit your application electronically. In-person appointments can also be scheduled through the guide.
Wisconsin REAL ID
Wisconsin offers driver’s license holders the option of a federally compliant form of identification known as a REAL ID. The REAL ID is a necessary form of identification if you plan to board domestic commercial flights or visit federal facilities such as military bases.
The REAL ID requires additional documentation for proof of identity. A full list of acceptable documents can be found here. Non-compliant Wisconsin driver’s licenses can be upgraded to a REAL ID at the time of renewal for no extra charge. Driver’s licenses that are not due for renewal will incur a duplicate fee for upgrading. A valid U.S. passport can be used in place of a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card.
